Department Of Microbiology
 
The Microbiology department is actively involved mainly in diagnostic microbiology, teaching of undergraduate, post graduate, M.L.T. and physiotherapy students and also training of PhD scholars. The department is in process of development.

Every year 150 undergraduate students, 3 post graduate students for M.D. and 3 Ph.D. scholars are trained in the department by didactic lectures and hands on practical training. Besides this, major research programme running in the department are as follows

  1. Isolation and identification of new species of V. cholerae
  2. Isolation and species identification of Fungi
  3. Hospital infection control
  4. Neonatal septicemia
  5. Waste management
  6. HIV surveillance programme
  7. VCTC, PPTCT and EQAS
  8. Opportunistic infection in AIDS patient
PG programme includes seminars and training in order to enable them to monitor, manage and diagnose the microbiology problems. PG residents also participate in UG teaching.

Emphasis is given to bench work and hands on training to become a proficient microbiologist.

The department admits 3 Ph.D. scholars every year and they look after the research projects in the department.

About 55000 specimens are processed per annual in various sections of the department. A well trained, experienced and disciplined technical staff form the backbone of the diagnostic services.

Some new tests are added to pet the diagnostic needs of the hospital, which include P IGM, IgG ELISA for Dengue Toxoplasma, HCV and modified Acid fast stain to detect opportunistic infection in case of HIV/AIDS patients.
