MUTATION - October 2005

DEPTARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY
Jaini Sutariya (5th sem)       Maulin Vora (5th sem)

“Clearly ahead of its time, the Dept. was the 1st to use Audiovisual aids in 80’s and
introduce MCQ’s as a part of internal evaluation in 1991”

The department was established in 1965 under the aegis of Dr. H.R.K Arora. The Dept. today consists of 1 Head of the Dept., 3 Associate Prof., 5 assistant Prof. & 7 tutors and 2 residents. The Dept. is presently headed by Dr. (Mrs.) V.J.Patel. She was a student of this college and took over as HOD on 15th Aug, 2000.

In a special talk with the team of mutation, Dr. (Mrs.) V.J.Patel & other Dept. members threw light on various topics such as: Current activities & Future programmes of the Dept., PG prospects in Pharmacology.

Under the guidance of some of the best teachers, the Dept. encourages interactive learning and comprehension via lectures, tutorials, prescription writing as a group activity etc. Clearly ahead of its time, the Dept was the 1st to use Audiovisual aids such as overhead projectors in 80’s and introduce MCQ’s as a part of internal evaluation in 1991.The Dept. has presented 7 research papers in last 6 years and published 15 papers.

Since 1991 Medical Education and Research Unit (MERU) activities are being coordinated by the Dept. which include training medical personnel in education technology, workshops for practitioners etc.. The Dept. is actively involved in Institutional Ethics Committee.

Research is being carried out on the use of placebos in clinical practice, drug use pattern in elderly, post marketing surveillance on hypolipidemic agents, anti hypertensives, banned and restricted use drugs: what do practitioners know.

There is a bright scope for those who wish to take up Pharmacology as a Post graduation subject. They can then pursue their career in
  • Academics- Senior teacher in a medical college.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry- Medical advisor/clinical pharmacologist.
  • Contact Research Organization (CRO)-Clinical Pharmacologist.
The future planning of the Dept. includes providing printed journals to students, conducting Clinical Pharmacology practicals for students of II M.B.B.S and conducting various CME (continuing medical education) programmes.

During an interaction with Dr. A.J.Singh, he passed on a message to the students “LEARN ONE, DO ONE, TEACH ONE”. He also advised students to have a more clinical approach to Pharmacology by having look at patients and their treatment in wards once they have studied in Pharmacology class. Rest of the Dept. members wished best of luck to the students.

Varsha Madam her session saying “Attitude is better than intelligence”- Dennis Burkitt.

Next time we will have Dept. of Bio-Chemistry under the microscope.

STUDENTS’ VOICE

Dept. Of Pharmacology, as considered by most students’, is one the most honoured Dept. but I would like to convey a message that lectures should be made more interactive which would also improve Student-Teacher relationship and a more clinical approach should be taken towards Pharmacology rather than going into depths of t1/2. Also some more relaxation should be made in attendance.
Student II M.B;B.S.

Since MCQ’S are been taken regularly, I would suggest that they be taken more in a pattern followed by the entrance exams, a sort of clinical approach.
Student III M.B;B.S.
