Hey readers.. This being the first issue of MUTATION, I thought of starting on a sweet note and what better than CHOCOLATES…!!! There would be no soul on this earth who doesn’t love them…And guess what, even the medical fraternity & researchers are out with supporting facts…Yipeeee..!!
 
What is it that makes chocolate so irresistible..?
 
A large part of chocolate's allure, of course, lies in the taste - a deliciously rich concoction that satisfies the most intense craving. But several chemical reactions are also at work. For one thing, chocolate stimulates the secretion of endorphins, producing a pleasurable sensation similar to the feeling when you are out for a long drive with your loved one in a Mercedes SLR….!!!!
 
What does chocolate give protection against..?
 
Ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure, development of insulin resistance & other remote health hazards like cancer.
 
Is chocolate healthy..?

What are the benefits of chocolate..?
 
Eating 2 ounces (50 grams) a day of plain chocolate with a minimum content of 70% chocolate solids can provide essential trace elements and nutrients such as iron, calcium and potassium, and vitamins A. B1, C, D, and E and it’s a lot tastier than boring old vitamin pills. Flavonoids: Present in dark chocolate & proved good for the heart. Stearate: Fat present in the chocolate with no ill effects on cholestero levels. Theobromine: Mildly stimulating alkaloid present in cocoa beans. Nitric oxide: Critical for the maintenance of healthy blood flow and blood pressure. Antioxidants
 
Chocolate proved beneficial..How..?
 
A study compared how blood platelets responded to a flavonol-rich cocoa drink with 25 grams of semi-sweet chocolate and a blood-thinning, 81-mg aspirin dose. The research found similar reactions to the two from a group of 20 to 40 years old: both the drink and the aspirin prevented platelets from sticking together or clotting, which can impede blood flow.. In other words, flavonol-rich cocoa and chocolate act similarly to low-dose aspirin in promoting healthy blood flow. Reducing the blood’s ability to clot also reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks.

Researchers in Italy found a 12 mm Hg decrease in systolic BP & a 9 mm Hg decrease in diastolic BP in the dark chocolate group after a 15 day study. They also found the group had experienced a considerable decrease in the measures of insulin resistance. There were no changes observed in the white chocolate group.
 
Word of caution:
 
Not all chocolate is heart healthy. White chocolate, which a Harvard researcher points out is ”not really chocolate at all,” and milk chocolate may expand the hips rather than help blood flow. And none of the instant cocoa mixes in the local grocery store contain the flavonoids that improve blood vessel function.

And like everything else too much of chocolate can also be harmful. It can lead you to a dermatologist, diabetologist or your dentist with problems of acne, diabetes or gingivitis.
 
The Moral of the Story is:
 
A bar of chocolate here and there is harmless. Next time, as you eat that small piece of chocolate, think of pleasant romantic thoughts..!! That’s much healthier..!!
