Under the leadership of Dr. Pratik Patel, the forensic medicine department has seem a lot of improvement in the past few years. To name a few achievements, was the development of the FM. Museum which showcases photographs, weapons and other specimens related to forensic medicine, for the Knowledge of the students. In times of crisis and emergencies in the Gujarat State like riots and earthquake, this department has provided its services with immense dedication and hard work and performed thousands of post mortems. Very recently they were able to carry out an unprecedented "Superimposition".

This department is the largest of all departments of the NHL Municipal Medical College, both in strength of staff of members and clinical work. Though spread over all the major hospitals affiliated to the college, majority of its teaching staff works in the VS. Hospital. Here there are many specialized laboratories and hospital service centers like Blood bank with blood component separation unit, Hematology Laboratory, Histopathology and Cytology Lab etc.

The Blood bank caters to all kinds of transfusion needs of the indoor patients. Five blood components viz PCV, CRP, Platelet Concentrate, Cryoprecipitate and Cryopoor plasma are supplied free of charge. The blood bank is linked to the Red Cross Grid. Hematology lab has fully Automated cell counter, facilities for Hb and protein electrophoresis etc. besides the various routine blood investigations.

Histopathology and cytology labs have facilities like fully Automated tissue processors and various histochemical stains.

Many ICMR sponsored projects are begin carried out under the guidance of the Head of the Dept., Dr. N.R. Shah by many staff members of the department.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation run Sheth C.H. Nagri Hospital was established in 1963 and since then has been instrumental in preventing and treating many ailments of the eye and bringing light in to the lives of many. Under leadership of Dr. Ushaben Vyas the hospilal as well as the department has seen a lot of improvement.

Over 5000 operations were carried out in 2005. The OPDs are well equipped with the most modern instruments and facilities along with computerized cases, laboratories, eye bank etc. The hospital has a capacity of 100 beds and an operation theatre with most advanced facilities. Many research activities related to ailments of the eye have been carried out by the department and one of the papers published was felicitated with a national level award The speciality clinics run in the hospital include Surgical retina, medical retina, glaucoma, low visual aid. Cornea and contact lens clinics.

Presently, various diseases treated in the hospital include squint, cataract (Phacoeinulsification). Glaucoma corneal ulcers and diseases requiring corneal transplant, vitreactomy etc. Besides the hospital also provides training to UG and PG students in the field of ophthalmology.

Our future plans include installment of OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). Diode Laser ( for retinal diseases and glaucoma) and microscoper in the hospital.

The department plans to start cochlear implant surgery and rehabilitation centre, graduation course in Audiology. Cadaveric FESS surgery workshop and a Temporal bone dissection laboratory to conduct workshops.

Our department gets references for complicated surgeries like tracheal stenosis, extensive Angiofibroma from all over the state and from other states like MP and Rajasthan.

Under the leadership of Dr. Umakant Shah the department will continue to move ahead steadily towards excellence as it has done till date.
