RESEARCH PROJECT
 
Nagri Eye Research Foundation has started a project for the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy, called "Samvedana Eye Care For Diabetes". The project has been started from 30t' December, 2006 with the help of Samvedana Foundation (USA) and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The project is also approved recently by the World Diabetes Foundation. The duration of project is 5 years.

The primary aims of the project:

  1. Prevention of blindness and visual loss by early diagnosis and treatment in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

  2. Creation of awareness about diabetes and its complications including diabetic retinopathy among general population, health professionals and healthworkers. The project is divided into two parts:
 
  1. Screening of diabetic patients for diabetic retinopathy in four Municipal Corporation hospitals:

    • Nagri Eye hospital
    • V.S. Hospital
    • L.G. Hospital
    • S.C.L. Hospital

      In each hospital there is project room for registration of the patients, measurement of blood glucose level, history taking and detailed ophthalmologic examination.

  2. Screening of normal population for diabetes and screening of diabetic patients for diabetic retinopathy by organizing camps in each zonal ward of Ahmedabad city.

    The patients who require further management in the form of investigations, laser treatment or surgery are followed up at Nagri Eye Hospital.

    The project team consists of Principal Investigator, Project Incharge, ophthalmologists, five social workers, one computer operator, one lab technician, one project coordinator and optometry students.
